Batalha Monastery

mosteirobatalha

The magnificent and intricate Monastery of Batalha, with its numerous statues of saints and impressive pinnacles and flying buttresses, is certainly the most beautiful example of late-Gothic architecture in Europe.

Classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, it was the king D. João I who ordered the construction of this Dominican monastery in gratitude for the victory of Portugal over Castile in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

The monument is particularly notable for its Manueline motifs. Inside the chapel are the tombs of King João I and his English-born wife, Queen Philippa of Lancaster – founders of the “illustrious Generation” which included the famous explorer Infante D. Henrique – while the Real cloister with Gothic arches, is one of the best examples in the Iberian Peninsula.
