Óbidos Castle is a gem amongst the medieval castles of Portugal. Set on the hill top of the town of Obidos, if offers magnificent views of the surrounding vineyards, windmills and roof tops of the local houses.
The castle was originally built by the Arabs and came under Portuguese rule by King D. Afonso Henriques around 1148 and since then has been subject to several architectural interventions along the centuries.
One particularity about this castle is that King D. Dinis handed this castle to his wife Queen Isabel de Aragon as a romantic gift, complementing its beauty with marble and limestone blades.
Classified as a National Monument, it houses an inn since 1951.
